My Trainorama 49 class has also been weathered at last. I wanted to represent a 49 class as they were during the early 1960s when they were quite new, and when Parkes depot had a justifiable reputation for turning out very clean 49 class! I painted most of the silver on the end steps and handrails black, as the standard model is more representative of how they were in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s. I airbrushed the grills at the radiator end black and then weathered the bogies, fuel tank, pilots and the top of the loco, but left the sides and ends fairly clean.

Fotopic_Trainorama_4910_weathered_2-2-10.jpg   My Trainorama 49 class has also been weathered at last. Fotopic_Austrains_MLE_weathered_2-2-10.jpg   This Austrains MLE has also been weathered, with much work being done on the wooden deck. First step was to lightly sand the deck planking to give it a little ‘grain’ and then the individual boards were picked out in various shaded of black, grey and brown. Once the vehicle was completely weathered everything blended together and the deck looked just as I remember them!  Current Projects  (10)
Fotopic_Austrains_ELX_weathered_2-2-10.jpg   Another recently completed project is this weathered Austrains VR ELX open wagon. There were no structural changes needed, except to re-score the grooves that represent the doors on the inside of the wagon a little deeper so they were more prominent. I used some SEM VR wagon red to paint the bogies, wheels and the white end steps (the white steps was a 1980s development and I’m not prepared to come any further ‘forward’ than the 1970s!). The outside of the wagon was only lightly weathered, as VR wagons back then always seemed to be much cleaner than their NSW equivalents! (I suspect a combination of a wetter climate and not as many steep grades!) The interior, however, was heavily weathered, as the interiors always seemed to be a lot worse than the exteriors!  Current Projects  (10)
Fotopic_Trainorama_SAR_LX_lightly_weathered_2-2-10.jpg   This Trainorama SAR LX had the shunter’s steps replaced with Model Etch components for a review back in 2006 (see the Review section, AMRM Issue 259, August 2006) and since then has been trundling around the layout unweathered and with bright brass steps! I finally got around to painting the steps, bogies and wheels during my Xmas ‘holiday’ last month and then finishing it off with a very light coat of ‘road grime’.  Current Projects  (7)
Fotopic_Trainorama_BWH28745_heavy_weathering_2-2-10.jpg   This one also had the bogies painted, but the weathering was a bit heavier! Allowing the acrylic wash to run ‘naturally’ down the sides has neatly reproduced the accumulation of ‘muck’ in the appropriate places!  Current Projects  (6)

After a long period of not doing any modelling at all, I have started work on some new projects.
9th Dec 2007Rurr Valley Railway - services suspended!
After a year in which no trains ran, the RVR has gradually been taken over by greenery. By late 2007 it even more closely resembled its inspiration, Tasmania's Abt railway, albeit after closure! Then on Thursday 6th December 2007, a one-in-twenty year storm hit Sydney, the creek at the bottom of our backyard flooded nearly a metre higher than ever before, flooding the railway, washing away the 'Mt Lyell' bridge and damaging the 'Dragonrock' bridge. Luckily, perhaps due to the dense covering of greenery, the rest of the railway suffered only minor damage, despit a sizable portion of the Bottom Rd being under water...

Photos of Chris Sim's HO layout based on the old Como bridge. I'm helping Chris build the layout and so far we have it running, including a working automatic gantlet track on the bridge, and it has reached the basic scenery stage. When its finished we intend to exhibit it...... if we can get it out of his flat.... ;-)
